Chapel Hill, NC, USA: Data for Impact, University of North CarolinaAbstract: Efforts to improve health-related supply chains in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) typically focus on medicines and vaccines, while the medical equipment system is either overlooked or considered incidental. This research was conducted to assess the performance of the medical equipment information system in the DRC and make recommendations for its improvement. The study aimed to understand the design and functionality of the medical equipment information system, identify strengths and weaknesses, and examine the impact of the system on health service delivery. The research also explored the role of donor support in the medical equipment information system. Data for the study came from a desk review of national policies and procedures, as well as key informant interviews conducted at central and provincial levels in three provinces. In-depth interviews were also conducted with health zone chief physicians, hospital heads, and head nurses in selected health zones. Overall, the medical equipment information system in the DRC is not functioning as designed, leading to inadequate availability and maintenance of equipment in health facilities. The Ministry of Public Health should consider investing in strengthening this system as a means of improving overall health service delivery.
