Virtual Workshop: Private Sector Engagement Self-Assessment Monitoring (PSE-SAM) Tool

Tuesday, December 3, 2024 | 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm (GMT)/ 9:00 pm – 10:00 pm (EAT)
Track: Catalysts for Change: Driving Impact & Investments in Digital Health

Presenters: Agung Setiadha, Web Application Engineer, D4I/University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH); Susan Ross, Sr. Private Sector Engagement Advisor, USAID/Bureau for Global Health; and Tory Taylor, Technical Director, D4I/UNC-CH

About the Session:

USAID calls private enterprise “the single most powerful force for lifting lives, strengthening communities, and accelerating sustainable development.” Prior research has elucidated key factors such as performative capacity, operational alignment, and relationship management that influence successful engagement among the private sector and traditional development actors. Further, there is a lack of tools to support adaptive management by co-engaged organizations including international donors, the private sector, local government, and civil society.

The PSE-SAM tool was developed by the USAID-funded D4I project in response. Originally developed and tested as a paper-based tool, the PSE-SAM was later transformed into a digital tool to enhance its functionality and user experience. This interactive workshop will introduce users to the digital PSE-SAM tool—a free, innovative, and easy-to-use resource.

The centerpiece of the workshop will be a demonstration of the digital PSE-SAM tool’s capabilities and functions. The audience, as prospective users, will have the opportunity to register a PSE group and invite affiliates, complete the tool online, and review automated results and visualizations—such as comparisons across multiple rounds over time.

Presenters will also describe the history of the tool, including how content was adapted from the “Perceived Worth of Continued Engagement” framework emanating from detailed PSE case studies, pilot tested in the Philippines and Tanzania, and digitized to align with user requirements, interface specifications, and feedback from test use. Participants will have opportunities to interact with the tool, ask questions, and contribute to a facilitated discussion about how this resource supports other high-level development practice priorities in addition to PSE, such as collaborating, learning, and adapting and locally led development.
